Accessibility at the Dickens Festival

We believe it is important that everyone can enjoy the Dickens Festival. This means that we think about making the event accessible to as many people as possible. We are discussing this with all kinds of visitors and institutions. The Dickens Festival takes into account people with a visual, auditory, cognitive or intellectual and mobile disability. Every year we try to achieve a number of objectives.

At this moment you can already expect the following:

Queue
People with disabilities for whom it is not possible to wait in line for a long time, a separate entrance created at the front of the queue at the entrance to Walstraat. Per person applies, 1 supervisor. If you come with a large group, we request that you contact the organization in advance.
You can report to the employees and volunteers with the recognizable 'CREW' jackets. They will show you where you can enter the entrance. Please note that our employees must be able to determine whether you actually have a reason why you cannot join the queue (e.g. by means of an autipas). If you wish to use the entrance at the front for an invisible reason, we request that you show the employees your reason or contact the organization in advance. [email protected]

Any questions during the Dickens Festival?

Do you have any accessibility questions during the Dickens Festival? There are taccessibility ambassadors present at the entrance and queueThey are recognizable by a white vest with a wheelchair iconThey are there to help you during the festivities.

Parking
There are several places in the city center of Deventer where disabled parking spaces are available. We recommend arriving in Deventer early to avoid having to park further away.

Toilets
From the beginning of the row to the end of the route, public transport is provided Toilets, (including fully accessible MIVA toilets).

Uneven terrain
The Bergkwartier has many uneven paths (cobblestones) and slopes. The Dickens terrain is therefore somewhat less accessible for visitors who are not very mobile. The terrain is wheelchair accessible, but the uneven paths and slopes must be taken into account.

Crowds and large groups

The Dickens Festival is a major event, attracting over 100.000 visitors to Deventer's city center. Therefore, the event is less suitable for those who are sensitive to overwhelming impressions, large crowds, and/or crowded streets and squares. Due to its location in the city and the presence of over 950 characters, it is unfortunately not possible to create a separate time for visitors to experience a quieter Dickens Festival. If you would like to attend the event at the quietest possible time, we recommend entering the grounds around 10:00 AM (the program begins at 11:00 AM) or after 16:00 PM.
