Dickens Festijn Deventer
2021: Dickens with a TwistThe 30th edition will take place in an altered form! This year the annual Dickens Festival, which takes place in the city centre of Deventer, will be held in a different form. The organiser, Evenementenbureau dEVENTer, does not yet consider a ‘nomal’ Dickens Festival as a rational option. But to create a Dickens experience ís possible!
In close cooperation with Jan and Emmy Strik, dEVENTer has opted for a scalable scenario in which a Dickens stroll through the Bergkwartier with a original audio tour is central. The walking-tour starts in the Walstraat, where visitors step into Victorian times and let themselves be carried along by the stories of the famous author on the basis of an audio tour of Dickensian scenes and stories. The tour brings the books of Charles Dickens to life. Of course produced in cooperation with the many stakeholders and people involved in the Dickens Festival. The audio tour is suitable for all ages. Unfortunately the audio tour will only be available in Dutch.
In addition to the audio tour, various other activities will be organised in and around the Bergkwartier area in cooperation with (local) partners of dEVENTer, over a period somewhat longer than the original ‘Dickens weekend’. From 9 to 19 December, visitors can enjoy Dickensian athmospheres and activities at the Bergkwartier.
From the end of November the monumental Bergkwartier area is being decorated with Christmas trees and garlands in Dickens style. From 9 December onwards, the Dickens Walk will be added to the list, which anyone can do in their own time. The planned additional activities will take place in the Bergkerk and among other places. The annual ‘Deventer Christmas City’ concerts in the Lebuinuskerk and Broederenkerk will also take place on Sunday 12 December. Despite the announcement that there will be less restrictions concerning de corona pandemic, Evenementenbureau dEVENTer argues the situation is still too uncertain for events on a larger scale this year. Last editions, more than 100,000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad came to the narrow streets of the Bergkwartier. In addition to the aspects of organising the event, safety also involves the health and social impact of the event. dEVENTer believes that it is still too early to organise such a large event, partly because of the uncertain course of the pandemic and the ensuing government policy.
Over years, Dickens Festival has grown into an event with national and international fame, and has put Deventer on the map as an events-city. Furthermore , this year the Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary. In many ways this becomes a special edition. The organisation intends to pay special attention to this as well. By deploying an alternative scenario, the organisation assumes that the visitors will be able to enjoy the Dickens Festival Deventer (even more) this year!
We are also looking forward to 2022, when the Dickens Festival will take place on 10 and 11 December.
